Craughwell United Notes 25/26 March   26/03/2023

Craughwell United Juniors made the long trip to Claddaghduff to face West Coast United on Saturday afternoon. The hosts converted early but Darragh O'Connor scored on the half hour mark having been set up by Eoin Shiel. A missed penalty by Joe Jackson saw the teams level at the break. West Coast scored a long range effort on the hour mark and United pushed hard for another equalizer but were stung twice late on having put in a good performance. 4-1 the final score.

The U17 girls lost 5-1 at home to Colga on Sunday afternoon at Coleman Park. Craughwell were caught cold in the first minute and fell behind but they recovered well to match their stronger opponents for the rest of the first half. Colga scored twice early in the second half before Katie Slevin scored from the penalty spot after Grace Keaveney was taken down. The away side got two more before the final whistle but Craughwell showed great determination until the last kick in their final game of the season. Best for Craughwell today were Fiona Waters, Alannah Farrell and Kelly Hallinan.

The Under 13 A Boys hosted Merlin Woods on a sunny Saturday. They found it hard to get a foothold in the game and went 1 down to a sloppy shot in the first half. The defensive line and 'keeper were solid throughout. United equalised after some nice build up play with Charlie Duggan passing to Cathal Desbonnet who rounded defender and keeper to slot home. Charlie himself was unlucky not to get the winner as the ball hit the inside of the post, across the goal line and out the other side. Spoils shared at 1-1.

Also on Saturday Craughwell's Under 12 Boys faced Loughrea in a local derby in the Connacht Shield Quarter Final at Colemans Park. Craughwell went toe to toe with a Loughrea side who sit two divisions higher in the league. United controlled the tempo of the match and within 10 minutes Darragh O’Donnell broke through 2 tackles and Edward Donoghue slotted home to the bottom corner. Ten minutes later Edward Donoghue dribbled though the Loughrea defence before pulling the ball back and hitting the back of the net with a well taken left footed shot to end the first half 2-0. Loughrea started the second half with more urgency and tested Craughwell’s defence which held strong throughout the entire half. Craughwell had a number of chances but were denied. Loughrea pulled one back with 2 minutes to go but Craughwell held out to be deserving 2-1 winners. Everyone is now looking forward to a home tie against Colemanstown in the last four.
